Traces of all these civilizations can be found surrounding our town. The first settlement of Marmaris was called Physkos and is still being excavated by archaeologists today. The ruins are known as Asartepe. Legend has it that Suleyman the Magnificent ordered the castle in Marmaris to be enlarged. He then travelled to Rhodes and upon his return found it was still too small for his liking and ordered his men to "mirmari" which means hang the architect!
